WTF is SEO?

Gemma Saltmarsh March 27, 2017

SEO. Search engine optimisation. That thing all those random spam emails keep annoying you about. What the hell is search engine optimisation and why are people always bugging you about it? I like to think of Google and other search engines as the new White and Yellow Pages. Except they don't just cover your local suburb, or Hobart or Tasmania. They cover all the people and businesses across the globe. Listing your business used to be as easy as listing your details in the phone book. Now, it's a competitive battle to stay at the top of the listings when your potential customers go searching for a product or service like yours online.

Search engine optimisation is a bundle of lots of different marketing techniques which combine to give your website the best chance that the right people will find it when they go to look for something you offer. Website development, copywriting, keyword identification, content creation are all a part of it. I'm a firm believer that Google's algorithms will always be powerful enough to weed out the "fakes" from the authentic websites. Which means that it pays to maintain your website and work on it over time. The more clearly you describe your products and services and the more useful the information is that you deliver through your website, the more likely Google is to reward you.

The good news is that new website management platforms are making it easier than ever to manage your own website SEO. There are plug-ins that can help you tick off the boxes and cover all your bases and give you a bit of guidance in terms of where you can strengthen your SEO throughout your website. But it always pays to understand how things work. Knowledge is power and all that. So if you're unsure about how to make sure your website is an SEO champion get reading and learning and figure out how to make it shine brighter than your competitors!

Salt Brands & Marketing offers search engine optimisation packages or can upskill you to become a master of SEO so you have it covered. Get in touch if you're interested in finding out more.
